The Boise County Sheriff deputized Walter Coffin to assist in the search for Cottner and his accomplice to arrest them for the murder of Clay Miller. They went to a cabin where the men were known to be staying. The Sheriff sent Coffin ahead. He was shot down before the Sheriff could come to his aid.
